FiveClose Brain: brain games for older adults
Four short games a day, about 10 minutes, with big buttons and one question at a time. Each copies a kind of training that has been tested on older adults, and each gets harder as you get it right and easier when you miss. Free, no sign-in, and your progress stays on your phone.
The games
- Quick Look (how fast you take things in): a car or truck flashes in the middle, then a star around it. Copies the speed training in the ACTIVE study, where people aged 65 and over who trained, with top-ups one and three years later, were about 25% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over 20 years.
- Shopping List (memory): things to buy show one at a time; pick them out from the shelf. Copies ACTIVE's memory training.
- What Comes Next (reasoning): find the pattern in a row of pictures or numbers. Copies ACTIVE's reasoning training, whose benefit lasted ten years.
- Switch (flexible thinking): answer the colour or the shape, as the question changes. Copies task-switching training for older adults.
These are games, not a medical treatment. Staying in touch with people, being active, and looking after hearing, eyesight and blood pressure matter too.
